Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon, taking the first step at 2:56 GMT on July 21, 1969. Armstrong was part of the second group of astronauts chosen, and flew on two space missions, first Gemini 8 and then Apollo 11. On Apollo 11, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon in the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969, and Armstrong took the first step on the moon, saying, “That’s one small step for (a) man; one giant leap for mankind”. The Apollo 11 crew returned to Earth on July 24, 1969.
