Tipu Sultan was born in the year 1750. He was named Tipu Sultan after a saint Tipu Mastan Aulia of Arcot. He is also known as Tiger of Mysore or Tipu Sahib. He was the eldest son of Sultan Hyder Ali of Mysore. He had introduced several administrative innovations, including his coinage and new calendar system known as ’Mauludi year’. Tipu Sultan issued a large variety of coins in Gold, Silver, and copper. The gold and silver coins are specially known for their decorative legends in Arabic scripts.
