The stamps of Zil Elwagne Sesel (1983-84) mostly comprise thematic sets with popular subjects in order to attract foreign income from collectors living in ‘hard currency’ countries. Unlike many of their British Commonwealth peers, they have mostly limited their issues to local history, flora and fauna. They also had a low number of issues per year and avoided any unnecessary high values – which makes collecting them a lot more attractive. During the plantation era, cinnamon, vanilla and copra were the chief exports and c. 33% of the working population worked at plantations, with another 20% working in the public or government sector. Since independence, tourism has become the main industry and the outer islands now rely on this income.
